You may have heard the legend of how Chevrolet's co-founder Billy Durant came up with its famous bowtie logo when he saw the design on wallpaper in a Paris hotel. The problem is the legend isn't true. Here's the real story.

And for years, the story of the Chevrolet bow tie emblem was consistent. The 50 Year Anniversary issue of The Chevrolet Story, printed in 1961, tells the story:

"This was also the year (1913) that the famous Chevrolet trademark was first used on the cars. The distinctive trademark has appeared billions of times on products, advertisings and sales literature as the mark of dependability, economy and quality in motor transportation. It originated in Durant's imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car."

Billy Durant's widow, Catherine, however, claims that's not actually how he came up with the Chevy logo. According to Mrs. Durant — in an interview by Lawrence R. Gustin, who interviewed her for his book "Billy Durant," in 1973 — the bowtie emblem was first seen by her husband in an illustrated Virginia newspaper, while they vacationed in Hot Springs, Virginia around 1912.

 In 1909, Michio Suzuki (1887–1982) founded the Suzuki Loom Works in the small seacoast village of Hamamatsu, Japan. Business boomed as Suzuki built weaving looms for Japan's giant silk industry.

Suzuki logo is both simplistic and elaborate at the same time. It is difficult not to recognize the ‘S’ letter forming the emblem. However, sharp edges and chopped forms are definitely associated with the Japanese culture, reminding of samurai heritage and hieroglyphs. The company’s name below the logo is designed in customized Helvetica font.

Suzuki logo is arguably one of the most long-standing and globally recognized emblems in automotive world. Introduced in 1958, four years after the first Suzuki car had been built, the emblem featured a stylized ‘S’ letter, the initial of the brand’s name. Completed with full Suzuki name, the logo has become an icon.

Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a French car manufacturer of high-performance automobiles, founded in 1909 in the then German city of Molsheim, Alsace by Italian-born Ettore Bugatti. Bugatti cars were known for their design beauty (Ettore Bugatti was from a family of artists and considered himself to be both an artist and constructor) and for their many race victories. Famous Bugattis include the Type 35 Grand Prix cars, the Type 41 "Royale", the Type 57 "Atlantic" and the Type 55 sports car.

The death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 proved to be the end for the marque, and the death of his son Jean Bugatti in 1939 ensured there was not a successor to lead the factory. No more than about 8,000 cars were made. The company struggled financially, and released one last model in the 1950s, before eventually being purchased for its airplane parts business in the 1960s. In the 1990s, an Italian entrepreneur revived it as a builder of limited production exclusive sports cars. Today, the name is owned by German automobile manufacturing group Volkswagen.

Ford Motor Company is proud to have one of the most recognizable corporate logos in the world, the one that has been used for most of the company’s history. Yet, Ford’s first production car, Model A, introduced in 1903, featured an emblem with stylized ‘Ford Motor Company’ wording, complete with a fashionable artistic border.
The idea was supported by Henry Ford in 2011 and the notorious combination of script and oval badge became the trademark of all Ford vehicles sold in Great Britain. Yet, the rest of Ford automobiles and company internal communications went on to use the plain script lettering through the late 1920s.
The Ford logo has long been associated with blue color which has earned it wide recognition. The latest version of the logo, introduced in 2003 to celebrate Ford’s 100th anniversary, features a gradient of shades, from light blue at the top to navy blue at the bottom. The ‘Ford’ wording is designed in white letters and there is also a white oval line, embedded into the logo. At the dawn of Ford empire the emblem used to be black and white.

Enzo Ferrari told the story of the prancing horse logo just once:
The horse was painted on the fuselage of the fighter plane of Francesco Baracca — a heroic airman of the first world war. In ’23, I met count Enrico Baracca, the hero’s father, and then his mother, countess Paulina, who said to me one day, ‘Ferrari, put my son’s prancing horse on your cars. It will bring you good luck’. The horse was, and still is, black, and I added the canary yellow background which is the colour of Modena.
All racing fans are very familiar with the famous Ferrari "prancing horse" symbol. The famous symbol of Ferrari is a black prancing horse on yellow background, usually with the letters S F for Scuderia Ferrari. The horse was originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a legendary "asso" (ace) of the Italian air force during World War I, who painted it on the side of his planes. Baracca died very young on June 19, 1918, shot down after 34 victorious duels and many team victories.
